Saturday (6/17), Kerri & I went to see a matinee of the musical Wicked downtown Chicago at the Oriental Theatre (or more elaborately known as the Ford Center for the Perfoming Arts). We had gotten tickets way back in January because we didn't want to worry about them selling out. We had pretty good seats; center in the upper balcony. Since we had just been at the Cadillac Palace a few weeks ago, we knew how to get there and how much time to allow. Again, we took the "L" and arrived just as they were opening the doors into the theatre.
Surprisingly, a lot of people were taking pictures before the show started and the ushers went after them. I presume the flashes deteriorate the elaborate decorations

, but no photos whatsoever are to be taken. They should put signs up as you enter the main floor instead of only counting on the fine print in the playbill.
The musical was very good; great effects, great voices, great story. The musical tells about the witches of the Wizard of Oz. So it starts from the birth of the Wicked Witch of the West to the end of the Wizard of Oz movie. You find out who the Wicked Witch of the West really is and how she became wicked. They also tell the origins of the Scarecrow, Tinman, and Cowardly Lion.

Afterwards, we grabbed a bit to eat at the Walnut room in Marshall Field's. Even though it's a fancy restaurant, their prices aren't bad. Though I'd recommend passing on the Field's Special, unless you have pet rabbits. It's an open face turkey sandwich, but they put an uncut half a head of lettuce on it and then pour thousand island dressing all over it. Looks fancy, but not practical to eat. Kerri said it was a very good sandwich, just order it easy lettuce.
That was pretty much it for downtown since it was very warm and of course humid. It wouldn't be Chicago withouth the humidity. We met up with Fred & Co when we got back since he was in town for an extended weekend. He needs a break from all the PhD at CMU, PA.
